Herbert E. Garey Jr, 82, was called by God to come home on May 13, 2024. Herb aka 'Cowboy' was a resident of The Gill Home, Ludlow, VT receiving intense therapy after suffering 3 strokes.

Herb was born in Lebanon, NH on April 2, 1942 to Glendora Monroe Garey and Herbert E. Garey Sr. The family lived in Hartland and White River Jct, VT in his early years. Later, the family moved to Massachusetts and from there to Florida. Herb turned 16 years old while in Florida and was the first kid in school to have a car. It was a 1948 Fiat, so he was very popular! He continued to have a great love of cars and trucks his whole life.

A few years later, the family moved to Las Vegas, Nevada and Herb secured a job at The Dune's Hotel on the Strip as a Bell Hop. He met many a celebrity during this time and even rode horse back with Elvis and his bodyguards. While in Vegas, he acquired a horse, a large boat and many vehicles including a limo. He took great pleasure in driving family and friends around in it.

The family then moved to Alaska to work on the pipeline, but Herb missed New England and moved back to his roots.

A quote from Peter Daniels 'Herb started work for Daniels Construction in 1978 as a mason tender with Ronnie Brown and his first job was on the Ascutney School. He then went on to work on the telephone crew setting poles and installing underground manholes and conduit for many years as a Forman. He was always proud of his work with his JD 300 and service truck, often relating that he had over a million miles on it. Over the years, he also worked on many water, sewer, bridge and building projects before retiring on December 23, 2004 after 27 years with Daniels.

Herb went on to establish a lawn mowing and snow removal business at Country Estates Mobile Court in Ascutney, VT where he lived. He continued that until his first stroke on June 6, 2022. After recovering, he came home to dance again every Thursday night to Jason Cann and friends' music at Harpoon Brewery with his walker. Herb was always dressed in his finest Vegas Cowboy Attire, and everyone wanted to dance with him. He was a magnet for young children because there are not a lot of Cowboys in Vermont! He would give the girls a bracelet or a necklace he had purchased at the Dollar Store, and they were just thrilled! Herb brought joy to everyone he met. He was always happiest when he was dancing!

Herb's family would like to extend special gratitude to his care team at The Gill Home. They always went above and beyond and called Herb their 'Special Cowboy' and they loved his Hee Haws

Herb is survived by his brother, Thomas Garey and his daughter, Tiffany of Tennessee, half-sister, Margie Dean of VT, niece, Melody Geppi and family, niece, Suzette Vito and family and nephew, Kevin Tallard and family all of Vegas also George Tallard and Bonnie Poynter. Herb is also survived by stepdaughters, Deborah Pelton of Ascutney VT and Cynthia Parker of Lebanon, NH, step grandsons, Josh Pelton and wife, Sarah of Francistown, NH, and Nick Pelton and wife, Meredith of Springfield, VT, step granddaughters, Erica Parker of VT and Cory Parker of NY, step grandson, Justin Parker of Oregon, also step great granddaughters, Rowen Parker of VT and Ellie May Pelton of Springfield, VT.

Herb is also survived by his wife, Carol Mulroy Garey and her family.

Herb was predeceased in death by his parents, his loving wife of 50 years, Barbara Garey, his sister, Joan Fellows, brother, Robert Garey and stepson, Allen Parker.

A committal service will be held at the Weathersfield Bow Cemetery on Bowden Hill Rd, second gate entrance at 10am on June1, 2024 followed by a Celebration of Life at Ascutney Union Church at 11 am with receptions and luncheon following in church hall.
