John Francis Merchant, 90, of Claremont, NH died at his home Friday evening, December 16, 2022. He was born in Dewey Mills, Vermont on October 12, 1932, to Alba and Mary (Burke) Merchant.  Surviving family include his beloved wife of 45 years, Caroline Young Merchant. Four children, Gary Merchant and wife, Joella, Deborah Stone and husband Roy, Donna Jenkins, Jessica Merchant and husband, Tyler Parker; seven grandchildren, Caitlin Merchant, Michelle Beaton, Jennifer Stone, Chelsy Catsam, Garon Jenkins, Gabriella Parker and Tyler Parker Jr; five great grandchildren and a brother, William Merchant of Hollowell, Maine.

John joined the United States Marine Corps on March 2, 1950, in Portland, Maine. He is a veteran of the Korean War serving from October 1951 to September 1952. His specialty was Mortar Unit Leader. He received the Good Conduct Medal (USMC), National Defense Service Medal, Korean Service Medal and United Nation Service Medal.

John loved the outdoors, traveling, biking, hiking and kayaking. He and his wife hiked in many of the parks out west, he especially loved the Grand Canyon which he and his wife hiked eight times, the White Mountains in New Hampshire, and Moody Park in Claremont. He also loved the beach of Maine and of course a lobster roll.

He was a train enthusiastic and when he heard the whistle he would hop in the car and head for the Claremont Junction. John and his son, Gary took 2 memorable trips, one across Canada and one through the Swiss Alps by train.

A graveside service will be held in the Spring for the family in Mountain View Cemetery.  Donations may be made to the Kurn Hattin Homes for Children or a charity of your choice.
