Louis "Louie" Hipwell of Claremont, N.H. passed away peacefully in his sleep from natural causes at Woodlawn Care Center in Newport, N.H. at the age of 102. He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Doris back in 2015 after 69 years of a wonderful marriage.

He is survived by the last of six siblings. His sister Eleanor Patch who resides in Florida, his eldest son Brian of Lebanon and his youngest son David of Claremont. He also leaves behind several nieces, nephews, two grandchildren and two great grandchildren

Louie was a 1941 graduate of St. Mary's High School in Claremont.

Louie was a member of the ever-shrinking  "Greatest Generation," a 22 year Marine Corps veteran who fought in the South Pacific with the 1st. Marine Division at Guadalcanal, Cape Gloucester, and Peleliu where he received two purple hearts.

He tended bar at the American Legion and the Elks Club in Claremont, but was best known for running the Claremont Country Club where his love for the game and the love for his comrades made it his dream job. Louie ran the bar and the pro shop for a number of years, and fully retired in his early 70's. He continued on as an active playing member till he was 93!

Louie was very well known in town and loved by many. At 102, he witnessed the Great Depression. He saw technological advances that introduced the telephone, radio and TV to computers, cell phones and electric vehicles into our everyday lives. He witnessed the space race, the first landing on the moon, and the collapse of the Berlin Wall. He has experienced the brutal inhumanity of war and the never ending love of his beautiful wife. He was a man's man, tough yet caring. A witty, comical man that could make you laugh. When the chips were down, he kept moving forward. The only complaint he had was that he outlived most of his peers and that made him sad. I know this because he was my Father and best friend.
