Robert Albro Evans, of Newport, NH, died peacefully Tuesday morning at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon NH after a period of declining health related to metastatic prostate cancer.  He was born in Claremont, NH June 26, 1941 to Harold and Henrietta (Ayer) Evans.  After graduation from Stevens High School, he served in the US Navy from 1959 – 1963 as a communications technician.  Bob was then employed as a lineman for New England Telephone beginning in 1963, and its successor companies, until retirement in 1998.  He was proud of informal records for the number of utility poles he could set in one day and for the speed he could climb a pole using climbing spikes – often challenging much younger linemen to a contest.

After retirement, Bob enjoyed sharing a beautiful spot on Lake Sunapee with family and friends for many years.  He was quick to lend a hand to friends and strangers with small projects, lawn mowing, woodworking or just repairing anything broken.  Bob was a member of the Loyal Order of Moose, Masonic Temple and the American Legion.

Bob was predeceased by his parents, his brother Lawrence Evans of Pomona CA, and his previous wife Ginny Meding-Evans of New London, NH.  He is survived by his children, Steven Evans, his wife Carleen and their children Aaron and Rileigh of Goose Creek, SC; Lauren Templeton of Charleston, SC and her daughters Lexi and Tory; Michael Evans, his wife Nicole and their daughters Olivia and Lauren, of Hanover, NH; and Caryn Allen, her husband Ken and their sons Brandon, Cooper and Colton of Richmond, KY; his partner Donna Pitkin and her family, Mark and Lisa Pitkin, their children Brittany and Bryan; and Beth Pitkin and her sons Matthew and Michael, all of Newport NH.  Bob will be missed for his quick wit and never-ending badgering that he administered to all – a trait he attributed to inheriting from his mother.

Our family would like to thank the staff of Dartmouth Health's Medical ICU for their compassionate care provided to Bob and his family at the end of his life.  We are planning an informal gathering in the future to remember Bob.  His ashes will be spread at a special spot on family land in Claremont, where he used to walk as a youngster with his grandfather and they'd sit on a big rock and eat their lunch.  Donations can be made in his memory to the Upper Valley Humane Society.

A celebration of life  will be held at the Common Man in Claremont on June 9th from 2-5PM.
