Walter C. Provost Jr. died at home in Charlestown NH on June 13, 2023. Walter was born in Irvington, NJ and retired to New Hampshire with his wife Patricia in 2020 for the purpose of living nearer to family and for the enjoyment of the state's natural beauty.

While attending Paul Smith College in upstate NY, Walter redirected an interest in forestry management to finance. An entry level position with Robert Treat Savings and Loan in Newark led to Vice President and Senior Asset Manager for AmeriFederal Savings Bank's Commercial Construction Lending Dept. in Lawrenceville, NJ. During Walter's time with AmeriFederal, he additionally served as President of Mine Hill Urban Renewal Corp. and AmeriFed Realty Corporation.

In 1991, Walter was offered a position closer to home and spent the next 25 years as President CEO and director of Gibraltar Saving Bank in Newark, NJ. During this time, Walter received recognition for directing Gibraltar to be the first institution in NJ to donate a single family home to Habitat for Humanity which led NJ Savings League's participation and support of this organization.

Walter was also a past President of Essex County Savings League and a former member of the Board of Governors for New Jersey Savings League.

Walter continuously supported community service organizations and, over the years served as President, Treasurer and Director Emeritus for United Vailsburg Services Organization in Newark NJ during which time he received awards from the United Way and the City of Newark for his service to the community.

Walter never put a lot of importance on titles or on having an executive position and was always willing to slip into any vacant position to cover for an absent employee. He was well liked by his co-workers. Walter would be the first to admit that he was a 'Jersey Boy' at heart and loved spending time 'down the shore' or in the Adirondacks.

Walter actively supported his wife Pat's 20 year career in designing and crafting fused glass dinnerware and aided in marketing her designs seasonally in NY, NJ and CT. As a result, Walter became skilled in cutting glass and kiln repair.

Walter enjoyed his time with family and doing home improvement projects or working outdoors while always assisting in the care of an evolving menagerie of pets. Walter will be remembered for his dedication to his job, his loyalty to family, his generous nature and for his willingness to never pass by an injured animal without carrying it home.

Walter leaves behind his wife of 49 years, Patricia, daughter Lauren Provost Garrecht and son in law Christopher Garrecht of Unity NH, Jean and David Garrecht of Keene, NH, Vicki, Luis and Veronica Patino of Raleigh, NC and Cristina and Joshua Charles of Red Hook, NY and grand nephews Noah and Sascha Charles.

The family will honor Walter's life in a private ceremony and through support of animal welfare. For those who wish to donate a memorial gift, Walter would likely have chosen the Sullivan County Humane Society in Claremont, NH.
