William Joseph Murphy, 88, of Lempster, NH, died at home in the company of his wife and daughter, on March 12, 2023. He was born on October 10, 1934, the son of William Joseph Murphy and Barbara Nichols Murphy.

Bill was born in Queens, New York. He was raised by his paternal grandmother and aunts in Dorchester, Massachusetts where he attended Boston College High School on academic scholarship.  Bill graduated from Manhattan College in 1955 with a BSEE and earned an MSEE from Stevens Institute of Technology. His career spanned the information age where he made significant contributions in electronic control systems for applications in printing, space suits and oil refineries. He never retired and stayed up to date with his wide and varied interests including oceanography, energy and mechanics.

Bill met his first wife, Barbara, on a ski trip in New York. He took this passion for the outdoors into his marriage, settling in Suffern, NY and raising 7 children with skiing, camping, hiking, boating, gardening and many pets a big part of life. Bill believed in self sufficiency and had the intellect and talents to realize it. He was a self taught craftsman, mechanic, carpenter and mason. He extended his house, built furniture and rebuilt engines. He experimented with solar energy and wind power. Eventually he made his way to South Acworth, NH where he had more space and a very old house to which he could apply his considerable abilities. There he married Lynda and continued to raise his and her children.

Bill was always happy to share his knowledge with others and bring them into the process, making him a great father. This generosity extended to helping a neighbor with a project, repairing a stranger's car or even fixing the engine on a boat on which he was a passenger.

Bill is survived by his wife Lynda and his six children, Kathleen Murphy and her husband Ken Beaudry of South Glastonbury, CT, Maureen Rossi of Philadelphia, PA, James Murphy and his wife Jamie Paek-Murphy of Alameda, CA, William Murphy and his wife Kelly of Whitefield, NH, Terence P. Murphy of Jaffrey, NH, and Timothy F. Murphy and his wife Lourdes of Clifton, NJ; his sister Anne Renois of Middleton, NJ and brother Michael Murphy and his wife Sheila of Selden, NY; his grandchildren, T.J, Christopher, Nicholas, Leah, Melissa, Andrew, Megan, Caleb, Tyler, Ethan and Takao and his great-grandchildren, Quinn, Graham, Cole, Mack, Matilda, Adeline, Ronan and Krew. He is also survived by his step children Eric Metcalf and his wife Jody and step grandchildren Tyler and Hannah of Charlestown, NH and Troy Metcalf of Miller's Fall, MA.

He was predeceased by his daughter Eileen Hower, brother Francis Murphy and grandson Robbie Bickford.

Visiting hours will be held on Wednesday, March 15th at The Charlestown Memorial Chapel, 34 Main Street, Charlestown, NH from 4-6pm.  A Funeral Mass will be held on Thursday, March 16th at 11:00 a.m. at St. Catherine Church, 285 Main Street, Charlestown, NH.  Burial will be at a later date.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorial contributions be made to a Catholic Charity of your choice.
